LATEX CARE

Caring for Your Latex Garments

Latex is a unique, luxurious material that requires special care to maintain its beauty and durability. Proper handling, cleaning, and storage will ensure your garments stay in excellent condition for years to come. Follow these simple care instructions to keep your latex looking its best and to avoid common issues like tearing, staining, or discoloration.

Handling and Dressing

  • Be cautious of sharp fingernails, toenails, and jewellery that can tear or damage your latex. For delicate items, such as stockings, wearing cotton gloves while dressing is recommended.

Preparing Your Latex

  • Ensure your garment is properly prepared before wearing:

    • Use baby talcum powder or a water-based silicone lubricant to make dressing easier.

    • Gently pull the latex on, avoiding excessive stretching or snagging.

Shining Your Latex

  • Use a water-based silicone lubricant or pure silicone spray to shine your latex.

  • Avoid oil or petroleum-based products like baby oil or Vaseline, as these will degrade the material.

  • Polish your garment with a soft cloth or your hands. Be gentle with appliqué or detailed designs to avoid lifting or damaging them.

Stains and Discoloration

  • Light and Translucent Latex are prone to permanent staining from copper-based items, such as coins or certain jewellery. Even after removing such items, they may leave residue on your skin, so consider showering before wearing light-coloured latex.

  • Nicotine stains latex, and cigarette smoke can leave a permanent odour. Keep your garments away from smoke and nicotine residue.

Fire Safety

  • Latex is flammable and can melt under extreme heat. Keep it away from open flames and do not wear latex near fire or during fire performances.

Cleaning Your Latex

  • After Wear:

    • Clean your latex as soon as possible:

    • Wash in tepid water with a mild soap.

    • Rinse thoroughly inside and out with fresh water.

    • Air dry away from sunlight or gently pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

    • Avoid leaving the garment dirty, as sweat and body oils can degrade latex.

  • Water Marks

    • Some latex colours may develop a white, milky sheen after washing. This is normal and will disappear once the latex is completely dry.

  • Storage

    • Store garments at room temperature, away from sunlight and UV exposure.

    • Lightly dust with talcum powder, fold carefully, and place in a plastic bag.

    • Store in a closed drawer or similar environment to protect from dust and light.

    • If your garment has metal fastenings, wrap them in tissue paper to prevent staining.

    • Store light-coloured latex separately from darker pieces to avoid discoloration.

    • Keep it away damp conditions to prevent mould or discoloration. Ensure garments are completely dry before storing..
